Do the adult pro-wrestling fans who watch wrestling matches in the arenas know that those matches are scripted/staged/rehearsed?

Or, is it that they know and still love to watch them anyway?

According to this article, they do know it's scripted, and view it in the same light as any other scripted entertainment, like a TV show or a play.

Chris Mueller's article linked above raises some interesting points. First that yes, there was a time when perhaps quite a lot of fans did think it was real. Perhaps it wasn't so obviously scripted back then, or perhaps people were less savvy at spotting such things. But he also mentions that the pro wrestling industry itself now acknowledges that it is scripted and a major WWF figure, Vince McMahon, famously broke the fourth wall to indicate that. There are other cases of major wrestling stars breaking character and winking at the audience.

As some commenters point out, of course there could be fans who think it's real. This might even be common among very young fans. But by and large, sources on pro wrestling seem to indicate that most people are in on the gag and that pretending not to be is even part of the fun, i.e., seeing a live match and cheering like it's a real sporting event. For its part, pro wrestling seems willing to wink at the audience and openly acknowledge that it is scripted.

Do people know wrestling is staged?

Yes. For some reason, some people in the 70's and 80's still thought wrestling was real. It was not until Vince McMahon broke the fourth wall did the industry acknowledge openly that it was all scripted and set up in advance.

Answer 2

I do not know what individual pro wrestling fans know, or what fans in general know or believe.

Here is some evidence.

There was a tv series called Night Court (1984-1992).

I one episode the tall strong bailiff "Bull" Shannon (Richard Moll) got a part time job as a professonal wrestler. The prosecutor Dan Fielding (John Larroquette) noticed how often Bull won and bet more and more money on Bull. And finally there was a big wrestling match and Dan bet a very large amount on Bull.

Dan was in the locker room with wrestlers waiting for their matches, when he saw on the close circuit tv that Bull suddenly stopped wrestling. Fearing he would lose a lot of money, Dan asked one of the wrestlers if this was something that Bull was supposed to do. The wrestler looked at some papers and said "No, its not in the script."

So that indicates a popular opinion back then about how gneuine or fake professonal wrestling was.
