The dark one appearance

When Rumpelstiltskin an Nimue became "the dark one," they both changed their look - specifically their skin. They had a greenish skin tone so that they resembled more of a "crocodile."

But when Emma and Killian became the dark one(s), they didn't change their look the same way as Rumpelstiltskin an Nimue did. The most noticeable change was Emma's hair color.

Why was that?

Is the Dark One real?

Time does not exist for the Dark One, but since it does exist for a person's soul, he is unable to reach outside of time itself to touch souls burned from the pattern.

Is the Dark One a demon?

Some have claimed that The Dark Ones are neither demon nor fully human, while others see them as large inhuman beings that vary in shape. Through means unknown, the Dark Ones broke through the barriers of their realm and found their way into the universe in which humanity inhabits.

Is the Dark One part of the wheel?

Like the Creator - more or less the Wheel universe's deity - the Dark One is a primordial, cosmic source of evil. He's sentient, but not in the same way a human would be. The Dark One is, in fact, said to have been trapped by the Creator in a separate dimension at the beginning of time.

Who became the Dark One after Emma?

But… twist! Toward episode's end, it is revealed that prior to turning Excalibur over to selfless Emma, Rumple “tweaked” the (surprisingly mutable for a mighty) sword to instead move the Darkness… into him. So, he is now the Dark One — more powerful than ever, and with his returned love Belle (again, oy!)
