In the English translations of the Moomin books that I have read her name is always "Snorkmaiden".

Wikipedia suggests that in Finnish she is "Niiskuneiti" and in Swedish "Snorkfröken".

I have found other names for her here:

  • German: Snorkfräulein
  • French: la Demoiselle Snorque
  • Italian: Grugnina
  • Russian: Фрекен Снорк
  • Polish: Panna Migotka
  • Icelandic: Snorkstelpan
  • Dutch: Snork-meisje
  • Estonian: Tusklikupreili

But bewilderingly in the first episode of Moomin she is referred to as "Floren" in the Japanese audio (it is also spelled out in the English subtitles.) Where does this name come from?

Best Answer

In Polish "Panna Migotka" translate to "Miss Blinky". So nothing in common with a "snork" but because she wears a "golden" ankle band.

And Floren? I would say it's same mind set as in Polish. Snorkmaiden have three distinctive elements: Blonde hair, jewellery and flowers. So flowers > floral > Floren.

In Polis "snork" translate to same word as smoking pipe - "fajka". And that's pretty bad name for a girl.

Why is Snorkmaiden called Floren?

It is likely that she was named Floren due to her habit of wearing flowers being a distinctive part of her appearance, and possibly as it was easier to translate. Similarly, in Polish, she is named Panna Migotka which translates to "Miss Blinky", mostly likely noting her shiny golden ankle bracelet.

Are Snork and Snorkmaiden related?

Snork is Snorkmaiden's brother. They are both Snorks, a species that differs slightly from the Moomins. One special characteristic of Snorks is that they always change colour according to their mood. When Snorkmaiden is upset, she turns light green.

Does Snorkmaiden have parents?

Moomintroll is the only biological child of Moominmamma and Moominpappa. In addition to the adopted children Sniff and Little My, also Snorkmaiden, Snufkin and Mymble (younger) occasionally live in the Moominhouse as equal family members.
