Does the scene with Galadriel, Saruman, Elrond and Gandalf take place in the book? - Woods Covered With Snow

The scene I'm referring to in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey takes place in Rivendell where Galadriel, Saruman, Elrond and Gandalf discuss the dwarves' quest and the Morgul blade.

It's been a few years since I read The Hobbit and I'm wondering if this scene took place in the book?

Best Answer

They are referred to as the White Council in the lore of LotR. This meeting does not take place in The Hobbit but is mentioned in The Lord of the Rings Appendices which were released with The Return of the King.

This meeting is mentioned in Appendix B, at least according to the LotR wiki

Information about the appendices can be found here.

Furthermore, I'd like to point out that Peter Jackson only has rights to make movies based on The Hobbit and the LotR series. So anything in these movies will only come from these 4 books.

Galadriel assures Gandalf that she will aid him if need be, before she departs. The council does not appear in The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, though they are still active. Galadriel instructs Gandalf (and presumably Radagast) to investigate the tombs of the Nazg\xfbl.

Does Galadriel appear in The Hobbit book?

Book: Galadriel does not appear in The Hobbit. Although Tolkien never explicitly mentions in other other works that Galadriel ever journeyed to Rivendell, it is not reasonable to assume that she occasionally did so \u2014 both as the mother of Elrond's wife, Celebrian, and as a member of the White Council (see below).

Did Galadriel fight Sauron in the book?

Galadriel's duel with Sauron also alludes to another passage in The Fellowship of the Ring, The Mirror of Galadriel, where Galadriel states that she can perceive Sauron's mind, while he is unable to do the same because Galadriel states the door is still closed.

Is Saruman mentioned in The Hobbit?

Unlike some of the other characters in the book, Saruman had not appeared in Tolkien's 1937 novel, The Hobbit, or in his then-unpublished Quenta Silmarillion and related mythology, which date back to 1917.

No it's not. It is mentioned but not in the Hobbit. I believe it's from another book of Tolkiens though and I'll link to it if I find the reference.
