Western with extremely sweat-lathered horses [closed] - Three Brown Horses in Pasture

I recently watched a western that showed some (feasibly only one) extremely sweat-lathered horses. They'd been ridden hard, but I honestly can't remember if it was in the context of a horse-race, outrunning Indians, or whatever. I'm kinda stuck because I've already tried to reference it in an answer over at english.se What does "Whip into a lather" mean?

Sorry - I know that's not much to go on. But the lather was pretty extreme!

Ooops! - I found the answer myself! It's Bite the Bullet (1975), starring Gene Hackman, Candice Bergen and James Coburn. Not as good a movie as I'd have hoped from that line-up, in all honesty.

The movie centres on a 700-mile "endurance horse race". I think one of the central themes is basically that it's "the American way" to win at all costs. Per the answer on ELU about the meaning of Whip into a lather, the horses may not actually be as distressed as one might think, but it certainly makes a striking image.

What causes excessive sweating in a horse?

Your horse sweats to cool himself in hot weather and during exercise or periods of stress, such as a trailer ride. It's the evaporation of sweat, not its presence on the skin, that actually cools the horse.

What does it mean when a horse is lathered up?

It means that the horse is relaxed enough to salivate and chew gently on the bit while being worked.

Is it bad for a horse to lather?

A thick white lather indicates that the horse is being overworked or is becoming too heated and the horse's body is saying, "Whoa!" let's not carry this workout too far." White, foamy sweat is a by-product of over-strenuous work or being exercised in excessive heat.

What is it called when a horse can not sweat?

Anhidrosis in horses is defined as the absence of an adequate amount of sweat which will result in several clinical signs. A horse with anhidrosis is often called a “non‐sweater”. This condition is frequently performance limiting and may put a horse at risk for hyperthermia or heat stroke.
