Rebel in opening scenes of Star Wars Episode 4

Rebel in opening scenes of Star Wars Episode 4 - Stylish female rocker screaming in studio

At the beginning of the movie, Vader and the storm troopers board Princess Leia's ship. At one point Vader was holding a rebel in the air and was interrogating him, and then throws him away after he died. I was somewhat confused as to how that rebel died. Did he commit suicide, did Vader crush his throat, something else?

Best Answer

The man that Vader is strangling is Captain Raymus Antilles. He's the captain of the ship carrying Leia and the droids. His death was by strangulation by Vader during that scene.

What is the purpose of the opening scene in Star Wars A New Hope?

It's arguable that the sequence helps set the tone for the entire film from both a visual and aural standpoint, bracing us for a galactic fairytale that is dramatic and faintly surreal. What's all the more remarkable about Star Wars' first shot is that it was among the last to be completed.
