What is the relevance of the algae dripping liquid? - Person's Hands Covered in White Liquid

Close to the end of the movie Aniara, there is a specific shot of maybe a few seconds that clearly have been added intentionally, but I'm not sure I understand the meaning fully.

After Mimaroben received an award for her space beam, a set of bags containing algae is shown dripping liquid.

There is no further mention of this in the movie which ends perhaps a minute later. What is the meaning of this event in the context of what happens next?

My current best guess is it's expressing

the level of decay and apathy of the society on board in that they are not even tending to their only remaining food supply. However, given that the next scene jumps 14 years later, with some passengers still alive, I'm not sure if this all there is to it.

What is the importance of algae in water?

Algae play many important and beneficial roles in freshwater environments. They produce oxygen and consume carbon dioxide, act as the base for the aquatic food chain, remove nutrients and pollutants from water, and stabilize sediments.

What is the importance of algae?

In addition to making organic molecules, algae produce oxygen as a by-product of photosynthesis. Algae produce an estimated 30 to 50 percent of the net global oxygen available to humans and other terrestrial animals for respiration.

Why does algae cause water pollution?

Elevated nutrient levels and algal blooms can also cause problems in drinking water in communities nearby and upstream from dead zones. Harmful algal blooms release toxins that contaminate drinking water, causing illnesses for animals and humans.

Is algae water good for plants?

Green water is caused by algae. Algae is an aquatic plant that contains chlorophyll which is responsible for its green appearance. High nutrient content in the water and light is key for algae growth and the water's green appearance which makes it a good source of nutrients for plants.
