How can Adelaide talk?

How can Adelaide talk? - High angle of male pouring carbonated drink from tin can to smiling black friend sitting with red cup

In Us (2019), at the end of the movie we came to know that Adelaide was the clone for Red. Clones only shout throughout the film but Adelaide can talk like a human, how is that possible?

Best Answer

It's shown within the movie that when Adelaide is found by the parents after the incident in the fun house / hall of mirrors, Adelaide is mute. They visit a doctor. The doctor explains that after severe trauma, young children sometimes lose the ability to speak. That's actually just the doctor's diagnosis of what he thinks must have happened, when the truth is that Adelaide is a clone who has never been able to speak.

Adelaide is then given speech classes to learn how to speak "again". All of her clone-related personality traits (inability to speak, lack of normal social skills, possible unfamiliarity with the parents), are all attributed to her traumatic experience in the fun house.

Does Adelaide know she is a tethered?

But Adelaide doesn't seem to know that she's the kidnapper who originally grew up Tethered — that is, until the final moments of Red's life. In the film's climax, Adelaide has fatally wounded Red; Red uses her final moments to do something unexpected: She whistles.

Why cant the tethered speak in Us?

Nyong'o modeled Red's voice after spasmodic dysphonia, a speaking condition that can be caused by emotional trauma.

Why do the tethered have scissors?

If you can't tell by now, duality is the theme of Us. Scissors, it would follow, are the film's violent mascot. In Us, the Tethered use golden shears as their weapon of choice, not just because they're easy to wield, but also because they're symbolic.

How did Jason know his mom was tethered?

But there's one more subtle twist at the end of the movie that complicates it further. Jason looks at Adelaide in the car—who we now know is a Tethered—and some sort of acknowledgement passes between them. This seems like an indication that Jason seemed to realize that his mother was actually one of the Tethered.
