I didn't understand why the tribespeople suddenly left Papillon alone in their village?

They'd clearly invested time and effort building the huts but then they just up and went. Why?

The tribespeople seem to be nomadic, traveling between the islands on their collection of boats, trading for supplies and collecting seasonal fruit and vegetables from the (otherwise non-inhabitable) islands.

They made a brief stop at the island where they harvested a crop of oysters and their pearls, which they then traded for artifacts of value from the nearby prison colony.

You may wish to note that they ultimately left the remaining (worthless to them) pearls in the makeshift village, presumably as a symbol that they would no longer return in future.

How did the original Papillon end?

As they stand on the cliff side, Dega decides not to escape and begs Papillon not to either. Papillon embraces Dega a final time, and then leaps from the cliff. Grasping his float, he is successfully carried out to sea. A narrator states that Papillon made it to freedom, and lived the rest of his life a free man.

Does Papillon escape in the movie?

Because a fall from the cliffs would mean certain death, Papillon bags coconuts together for a raft. During a swell of waves, he jumps from the cliffs and survives the fall. The third escape is a success and he is a free man.

When was Papillon set?

Papillon opens in 1931 Paris. Its safecracker antihero, whose nickname (French for \u201cbutterfly\u201d) comes from a tattoo on his chest, has just been framed for murder, and is quickly dispatched, for life, to a penal colony in French Guyana.
