In the movie The End of the Tour a scene shows David Foster Wallace and David Lipsky walk into a radio station and are greeted by a girl.

Girl from the radio station: Right this way. We record digitally. I hope that's okay.

David Foster Wallace: So just yes or no answers?

David Lipsky: That's very funny.

Wallace to Lipsky: Hey.

Lipsky: What?

Wallace: Hey. You do a really mean job with this,

Lipsky: Yeah?

Wallace: I got, like, 20 years to get you back. You remember that.

Lipsky: You're gonna be fine.

This scene ends here. What does Wallace mean? He makes a joke to the girl and then turns to his companion Lipsky and seemingly says a non sequitur. I don't see how it follows from the previous line or even makes sense. Something like "If you botch this you are going to be put away"? But Wallace is the one doing the radio interview and Lipsky is only tagging along.

What is the message of Infinite Jest?

In Infinite Jest, addiction, mental illness, and suicide are not unusual or abnormal pathologies that affect only a select number of people. Instead, they are ubiquitous: every significant character in the novel seems to suffer from addiction or mental illness of some kind.

What does David Foster Wallace say we have the ability to do?

\u201cThe really important kind of freedom involves attention and awareness and discipline, and being able truly to care about other people and to sacrifice for them over and over in myriad petty, unsexy ways every day. That is real freedom. That is being educated, and understanding how to think.

What was David Foster Wallace philosophy?

Wallace would later identify his attraction to technical philosophy in aesthetic terms: It was, he suggested, a craving for a certain kind of beauty, for the variety of imaginative experience characteristic of formal systems like mathematics and chess.

What are the years in Infinite Jest?

Most of the action in the novel takes place in the Year of the Depend Adult Undergarment, or Y.D.A.U., which is probably AD 2009, taking the Year of the Yushityu... (the lengthily titled 6th Subsidized Year) as 2007.
