Because there was a prediction that they would fail if they didn't include someone not from the North.

IMDB Synopsis

Regardless of his feelings towards them, an old soothsayer whom the Vikings call the angel of death, cast the bones and warns the band that they will fail unless they are accompanied on their journey by a 13th warrior and one who is not from the North.

The soothsayer has, essentially, they believe, seen the future and can tell them that he will play an essential part in their struggle.

Is The 13th Warrior historically accurate?

The movie itself is based on the novel Eaters of the Dead, by Michael Crichton, who adapted the Old English poem Beowulf and the Arabic account Risala. The events have a very loose basis in historical fact, so if you're watching the movie in search of historical accuracy, don't, because you won't find much here.

Why did the 13th Warrior fail?

Originally completed and intended for release in 1998, the film was pushed back more than a year after disastrous test screenings (and a reportedly ballooning budget) caused McTiernan to exit the project, presumably tapping the phones of every producer on his way out.

What language do the vikings speak in The 13th Warrior?

The film uses modern Norwegian and the occasional Swedish as a stand in for Old Norse, which was the language of the vikings. The vikings the real Ahmed Ibn Fahdlan encountered were the Rus (Swedish-Slavic vikings) and would have spoken East Norse, the dialect of Old Norse that later became Swedish and Danish.

Is The 13th Warrior based on Beowulf?

The 13th Warrior is a 1999 American historical fiction action film based on Michael Crichton's 1976 novel Eaters of the Dead, which is a loose adaptation of the tale of Beowulf combined with Ahmad ibn Fadlan's historical account of the Volga Vikings.

Answer 2

Mostly because 13 is a unlucky number in Europe and in Norse mythology. Loki a 13th god killed Balder and was 13th guest at funeral. But because Nords are very proud they don't consider arab a "person" so the thirteen member would not be unlucky if he won't be one of them.
